Implementation

We follow a carefully planned progression of skills and knowledge from Reception to Year 6.

The curriculum is carefully structured to support pupils in developing foundational and pre-requisite knowledge so that they are well-prepared to access later content. Pupils make connections between prior and new learning and practice the skills, techniques and methods taught with increasing proficiency.

Our History curriculum has a deepening structure and is planned to:

• It has increasing complexity, so that each time an area of knowledge is revisited it is covered more fully, allowing pupils to make connections.
• Build on prior knowledge so that pupils can learn new topic knowledge as well gain further chronological awareness and deepen their understanding through historical enquiry and the application of disciplinary concepts.
• Be inclusive, so that all can develop an understanding of how to stay safe and lead full and healthy lives.
• Develop understanding of the concepts including power, invasion, settlement and migration, empire, civilisation, religion, trade, achievements of humankind, society and culture.

Impact

The impact of the history curriculum will be evident through pupils’ work as they:

• Develop the confidence to think critically, ask questions and be able to explain and analyse historical evidence
• Build awareness of significant events and individuals in global, British and local history and recognise how things have changed over time
• Appreciate the complexity of people’s lives, the diversity of societies and the relationships between different groups
• Developing a chronologically secure knowledge of history
• Pupils’ readiness for their future learning
