Design and Technology (DT)

Invention is the most important product of a man's creative brain

NIKOLA TESLA

Our Intent

Our vibrant art and design curriculum is designed to help children to flourish as they appreciate, interpret and create pieces inspired by artists and of their own conception by developing:

  • Substantive knowledge of methods and techniques, media and materials and formal elements of line, tone, shape, colour, form, pattern and texture.
  • Disciplinary knowledge encompassing what makes a product effective, approaching problems creatively and testing and refining ideas in response to real needs.
  • Procedural knowledge of how to cut, shape, join and finish materials using tools, equipment and ingredients safely and accurately.

Implementation

Design Technology is taught using the Kapow scheme of work based on the 2014 National Curriculum with specific units chosen to match the needs of our pupils. The intention is for our pupils to become resourceful, enterprising individuals who have the skills to contribute to and improve the world around them.

The curriculum is structured around four strands that run through every unit:

  • Design.
  • Make.
  • Evaluate.
  • Technical knowledge.

These strands ensure a balanced coverage of the substantive, disciplinary and procedural knowledge pupils need to progress in Design and technology. They support the development of creativity, problem-solving and technical understanding, preparing pupils to design purposeful, functional products with increasing independence and confidence.

Impact

The impact of the Design and Technology curriculum will be evident through pupils:

  • Pupils’ thoughtful engagement and response to products and designs.
  • Ability to design, make and evaluate a product.
  • The development of children’s technical proficiency through use of materials, equipment and ingredients safely.
  • Pupils’ readiness for future learning.
