Art washes away from the soul the dust of every day life.

Our Intent
Our vibrant art and design curriculum is designed to help children to flourish as they appreciate, interpret and create pieces inspired by artists and of their own conception by developing:
- Practical knowledge of methods and techniques, media and materials and formal elements of line, tone, shape, colour, form, pattern and texture.
- Theoretical knowledge through considering the meaning and interpretations behind works of art that they study as well as exploring artists' materials and processes.
- Disciplinary knowledge, including how art is discussed, studied and judged.
- Developing the technical knowledge and the necessary skills to design, make and evaluate a product.
- Generating ideas and recording these using sketchbooks.
Implementation
Art is taught using the Kapow scheme of work based on the 2014 National Curriculum with specific units chosen to match the needs of our pupils. It is split into the key strands of generating ideas, using sketchbooks, making skills – including formal elements, knowledge of artists and evaluating and analysing. The formal elements of colour, shape, form, line, pattern, texture and tone are interwoven within the units of drawing, painting and mixed media, sculpture and 3D art and craft and design.
Our art and design curriculum has a sequential structure and is designed to:
- Have increasing depth, so that each time a skill or area of knowledge is revisited, it is covered more fully.
- Build on prior knowledge so that pupils can build on skills and knowledge that they have already learnt.
- Provide ongoing feedback and demonstration to improve the quality of pupils’ work over time.
- Be inclusive, so that all can access learning and enjoyment through designing, making and creating.
- Provide pupils with the opportunity to rehearse and revisit some knowledge and skills, such as drawing and evaluating, within both subject areas.
Impact
The impact of the art and design curriculum will be evident through:
- Pupils’ thoughtful engagement and response to art and design from a range of genres and artists.
- The development of pupils’ skills and competence over time so that they can express themselves through their own. compositions and products.
- The development of children’s technical proficiency.
- Pupils’ readiness for future learning.
