French

A different language is a different version of life.

Our Intent

Our carefully constructed French curriculum is designed to help children to develop confidence in communicating with others when:

  • Understanding and communicating ideas, using their knowledge of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary
  • Providing opportunities to develop language comprehension through listening and reading
  • Encourage pupils in language production through speaking and writing

Implementation

French is taught using the Kapow scheme of work based on the 2014 National Curriculum with specific units chosen to match the needs of our pupils. The intention is for our pupils to develop the skills to listen, speak, read and write in French, while building the confidence to express themselves and explore new ways of thinking through language learning.

The knowledge strands of phonics, vocabulary and grammar, often referred to as the three pillars of progression, are discussed in detail in the knowledge section of this page.

There are also two complementary skills strands:

  • Language comprehension.
  • Language production.

Additionally, pupils develop cultural awareness throughout the French curriculum.

Impact

The impact of the French curriculum will be evident through pupils:

  • Understanding and communication of ideas, using their knowledge of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary.
  • Language comprehension when listening and reading.
  • Language production when speaking and writing.
  • Pupils’ readiness for their future learning.
